U13BB Advances to International Silver Stick Tournament
On December 9-11 the U13BB River Kings attended the Chatham Silver Stick tournament. On Friday the team faced the Orillia Terriers. It didn’t take long for the team to get on the board as they scored a minute and half into the game. The team kept it rolling going up 5-0 before Orillia got on the board. This didn’t sit well and the Kings were able to score 11 seconds later and kept it rolling taking a 10-1 win to start the tournament. Callum Birdsell had a 5 point game, Carson Boughner had a 4 point game and Harmon Hartwick pulled out a hat trick. Carter Jenkins got the win in net.
Game 2 saw the River Kings play Essex-Southpoint. ESP had won a tournament the weekend before and the Kings were ready for a tough game. ESP came out flying and scored just over 2 minutes into the game. This game was back and forth and the goalies kept it tight. Colby Adams faced a lot of shots and kept the game tight. The Kings lost a tight one 1-0.
Game 3 saw the River Kings play Center Wellington. The team knew they needed a win. It appeared the opponents were not to be taken lightly and the River Kings need to battle hard for a win. The Kings came out with a 3-2 win. Carter Jenkins got the win and goals came from Ryder Abbott, Sebastian Reposo and Colton Dehaan. Mason Smith helped out with 2 assists in the game.
Then, the team had to sit and wait to see if we would move on in the wild card spot. Due to the low goals against in the round robin, the Kings moved on to a semi-final against Essex Southpoint.
The semi-final was played on an Olympic size ice and the teams were ready for a rematch. The first period ended in a 0-0 tie and then the River Kings took control with a goal from Ethan Dorland assisted by Sebastian Raposo. The team kept the pressure on and went up 2-0 when Ryder Abbott put one away with assist going to Dorland. In the last 7 minutes of the 2nd, there were no goals either way. ESP put the pressure on during the 3rd period. The Kings held on, however their lead was cut to 2-1 with 4 minutes left. The pressure was building and ESP had some good chances, but they couldn’t beat Colby Adams to tie it up and the team was moving to the finals!
The finals were against New Hamburg and the River Kings just couldn’t get it going. New Hamburg put on a lot of pressure from the opening face-off and they scored less than 1 minute into the game. New Hamburg didn’t look back and were able to get 2 more to win the finals 3-0.
This River Kings team worked very hard and performed very well in the tournament. The U13BB team was invited into the Pelham Silver Stick Finals tournament Jan 12-15 where they will face Santa Clara Blackhawks, New Hamburg and the Capitals Academy Blue.
